So, it’s Friday night (actually, tell a lie, its Saturday morning, 12.57am as I type), the 14th day of June 2008, and I’m posting a blog. I should be in bed, right? Yes, I should be – after all, I work long hours and I sleep like an insomniac. BUT… I’m in front of the computer and I’m listening to REO Speedwagon’s Greatest Hits (yep, sad but true!) and I’m thinking – you know what, they don’t make music like that anymore!
Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE music! I was the Feature Writer for Indie Music for Suite101 for about a year; I write for Indie-Music.com and my PR agency is sponsoring the 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards. Add onto that list the fact that I LOVE music full-stop, I think I have the right to say: “They don’t make music like that anymore!”
I’m sorry, but the late 70’s and early to mid 80’s showcased some of the best music around! Especially if you were a soft rock fan – Rush, REO Speedwagon, Honeymoon Suite, Journey, FM and more. Now THAT was an age of music. And they could all play live!
Today? You have over-produced pap and artists that make it because of crap like American Idol and similar. What the deuce? I’m sure they’re nice people and generally they make wonderful karaoke artists (exception – Kelly Clarkson IS talented). But as far as musical talent goes? Sorry, that stopped in ‘86 when Steve Perry left Journey after the “Raised on Radio” album.

REO Speedwagon has got to be one of the greatest bands of all time!
I’m a big fan of classic 80’s rock too and Steve Perry’s decision to go solo was definitely a sad day in music history, but the grunge pioneers of the early 90’s show just as much talent – after that, yes, talent in the music industry was thrown out the window in exchange for cute faces and popularity contests.
(Although I’m in love with Jordan Spark’s voice).
The talents still there…you just have to dig a lot harder to find it! But overall, no, they don’t make music like that anymore
